My Role: Lead and solo designer
Timeline: Aug 2022 - Sep 2022
The Problem
Long lines at the concession stand can be inconvenient for movie goers when a movie is about to start. For both customers and employees, an order-ahead option can be beneficial.
For the discovery phase of my design process, I conducted a survey for movie goers. Of the 15 participants:
  • more than half prefer online ordering to ordering in person.
  • about half of participants have had to wait more than 10 minutes in line
In regards to "order ahead" app frustrations, some pain points for users included:
  • not having multiple payment options
  • misleading pickup times
With all this in mind, I sought out to design for usability, accessibility, and convenience.

I created a high fidelity wireframe to start the prototyping process.

Opportunity
Not only are order ahead options valuable for the customer, but also for the business and its employees. Having the option to order ahead lessens long lines, and provides another very useful option for customers who may not always use that option, but want the choice to use it in the future.
Some very important aspects of my snack ordering feature include:
  • a simple, yet accessible interface
  • nutrition info for all items
  • pickup wait times are reliable, as the app gives the user the option to choose a pickup time
  • multiple payment options such as Apple and Google pay, and the option to pay in person
Retrospective
This was an exciting project to work on, both as a designer and an eager movie goer myself. I believe that users who enjoy going to the movies and also like the convenience of ordering ahead would appreciate this design for its simplicity and usability.
